*The Speaker:-*
Austeen Anibe Otene started the lecture by introducing himself.........
I will like to introduce my self as
. A native of Ofudu-Imane in Olamaboro LGA of Kogi State. Born Aug 25th, 1980. Married and blessed with Children. A graduate of Quantity Surveying. A practicing Senior Telecoms Specialist with over 15yrs hands-on in the telecoms and IT field. with certifications in Microsoft, Cisco, OSHA and Project Management.
I am an humanitarian, a Rights and equality advocate.
It is a pleasure to have me do this to this great minds of our dear and beloved Kogi State.
Once again, I am honored to be give the opportunity to run this in 2 interactive hours with this honorable house.
The Speaker Austeen Anibe Otene started by the definition of Community Service.
*He Speak further:-*
COMMUNITY SERVICE: As the name connotes, Community service is work or tasks performed by a person or group of people that benefits others. Most in times, within their own community and those communities reaps the benefits of the service.
Naturally, you do not get paid to perform community service, although sometimes in some special cases, souvenirs are given to volunteers.
Having defined what community service is, we shall be looking at the types and addressing beneficiaries of the said service.
*TYPES OF COMMUNITY SERVICE:*
There are various forms of community service which can be rendered by any individual or a group of persons. Howbeit, I like to state here and now that you do not need to be a politician or a political office seeker as it were to engage or provide community service else it will negates the purpose of such service.
Because such service(s) should not be done on a quid-quo-pro basis. "Doing it for something in return"
On the other hand, once you are a public office holder, it is only morally and for those who have empathy to engage in community service.
Addressing the types: It varies from the need of a particular area so we can address the concerns For instance, we have to provide healthcare Support, we can classify the need and then address then to enable the service worth the purpose. More so, when we engage in community service we must be fair and remove the sentiments of localizing it to become a personal business. Same as Education Support, Infrastructures such as community roads construction etc.
*The Speaker Further address the reason why everyon should partake in community service.*
Quickly, I will like to address the reason *WHY* everyone should participate in community service(s). First, I like to make it categorically clear that you do no need to be a rich person to contribute your quota.
Reason we must endavour to play our part regardless is because in one way or the other, we are beneficiaries. Directly or Indirectly.
But today, there is abuse of the subject by politicians. We live a society that deceits and falsehood has taken over the purpose and the worst of it all is that the same society celebrates these anomalies.
That is why I am not to quick to condemn leaders because they are a true reflection of our society.
There is an ongoing scam by politicians today. Everyone one of them wants to run a foundation or one or two services because they seek public office.
When you see people doing things to be noticed or praised and not for the very purpose of affecting humanity, then it becomes the opposite of community service which is eye-service.
So in summary, community service(s) are services rendered without expecting anything in return. Be it praise singing or otherwise as we usually have in our clime today.
You could affect you community with your energy by providing services like, clearing of grasses, clearing of blocked drainage, educating young people against social vices and now that we are in election season, such service could be extended to educate people against vote buying and selling etc
So like I said, community service(s) varies depending in the tailored need
After the lecture a lot of questions was asked by many philanthropist in the Forum, and the Speaker Responded to the question accordingly.
✍🏿The first Question was from One *Mr. Apeh o. Mordecai* Honourable sir,can you tell us clearly the difference between the community service which any one can render to his community and other services which is render by office holder or politicians in offices ??
*The Speaker answered:-*
Dear Friend, there are not particular community service cut out for anyone. Like I said earlier, it depends on the need of the said area that point in time. For anyone occupying political office of trust, there is more than just community service to be rendered and that is why it is pertinent to ask anyone seeking public office to present a clear-cut manifesto devoid of the usual political abracadabra
*Question 2 Was from Mr Apeh Mordecai again* Hon Austin.can you equally Advice the General house on some of the steps that will make community service easy easy for us....??
*The Speaker Answered:-*
Like I mentioned earlier, these services varies. They are voluntarily and as such, there are not laid down pattern to how it can be made easy. Community Service is driven by passion and empathy drive.
*Question 3*
Honourable Austin sir..what can we say.about the influence of a community servicer aspiring for a political post and some money bag and not a community servicer
*The Speaker answered*
This is where you are becomes stakeholders. We must educate our people that engaging in community service is not a yardstick to earn trust and votes in "some" cases. We must tell them to be very vigilant as some persons are out for the business part of this service. ''They play for a pay''
I find this a very wicked and a treacherous thing to do. Howbeit, we must all get involved.
*Question 4 from comr. Tijani*
Honorable Sir!
Pls what advice do you have for our leaders who don't see community service as a civic duty?
*The Speaker answered*
Advising an adult is a Herculean task. What we can only do is be wise to support only people we can attest for. But one question is; how can we tell who is a good guy?
All I can say to everyone is simple; Trust is Earned not bought. So our leaders must understand this. But until the people begin to use their powers to stand up to these sets of hard-line leaders, it will be hard to correct.
*Question 5 from Comr. Simon Yahaya Achadu*
How would you distinguish the difference between community service and corporate social responsibility?
But the Speaker could not answer the question because of lack of time.
